Whether you’ve already booked your next holiday or are still exploring cruises from Southampton to any destination, you’ll want to know what to pack for your upcoming cruise.

To create the cruise ship look, your holiday wardrobe needs to be a perfect mix of practical outfits for sightseeing ashore and strolling on deck, but with that extra touch of sophistication and glamour you need on a cruise. Luckily, we have got some great tips to help you achieve the perfect style on board and look great in your holiday photos.

Daytime Casual and Comfortable

As for what to wear during the day, casual, breathable clothing is essential to stay cool and enjoy your time in the sun. Opt for summer dresses or shorts and light tops during the day and don’t forget to wear comfortable shoes.

Flip-flops are good for the beach or pool, but they don’t offer much arch support and aren’t suitable for a long day on land. So if you’re going on one of the many sightseeing trips, opt for comfortable flats, walking shoes or sandals.

Swimsuits with cover-ups are ideal when you’re relaxing by the pool, while hats and sunglasses aren’t only stylish but also provide much-needed sun protection.

Many cruises now offer additional activities, from climbing walls to fitness classes – so don’t forget your sportswear if you want to take part.

Many cruise ships also have a spa on board, but before you indulge in a treatment, check whether you need to bring your own robe and slippers or whether these are provided for guests.

Evening Glamour and Formal Nights

Most evenings on board a cruise ship consist of dinner, drinks and live entertainment, with the typical dress code being “smart casual”, i.e. a smart short-sleeved shirt or summer dress is ideal.

However, it’s important to note that many cruises organise more formal evenings, such as a special captain’s dinner, theme night or gala, where formal evening wear is encouraged. In most cases, this means that you will need to adhere to a stricter dress code and wear a cocktail dress, evening gown, tailored suit or dinner jacket.

Layering for Unpredictable Weather

Use weather apps to check the forecast for your destination so you can plan and pack your clothes accordingly.

You should also bear in mind that temperatures on cruise ships can fluctuate greatly as you move between air-conditioned indoor spaces and warm outdoor areas with direct sunlight.

Pack a light jacket or shawl for those breezy evenings on deck, and think about layering pieces like scarves, cardigans or lightweight jumpers that can be styled up or down for different activities or easily packed away when temperatures rise.
