Every so often a piece of aesthetic technology arrives that doesn’t just add to the already crowded field of “tightening” devices — it shifts what’s actually possible without surgery. XERF, a dual-frequency radiofrequency system developed in South Korea, is being talked about as exactly that kind of arrival, having just received regulatory clearance for use in the UK.
What makes it different
Most non-surgical tightening devices — whether HIFU, standard radiofrequency or microneedling RF — work on the surface or mid-layers of the skin. XERF is engineered to reach further: the SMAS layer, the same deep structural tissue a surgeon addresses during a facelift. It does this using dual-frequency energy delivered beneath the skin’s surface, paired with continuous cooling to keep things comfortable throughout, without needles, incisions or anaesthetic.
Why the depth matters
The SMAS, short for the superficial musculoaponeurotic system, is the connective tissue layer that gives the mid and lower face its structure. Surgical facelifts work by tightening this layer directly. Most non-invasive devices can’t reach it at all, which is part of why their results tend to be more modest and shorter-lived by comparison. XERF’s dual-frequency delivery is designed to treat both superficial and deep tissue in a single pass — an approach that previously needed multiple devices or settings to achieve.
A familiar trajectory
XERF was developed in South Korea, a market that has set the pace for non-surgical aesthetic technology for the better part of a decade, before earning clearance in the US and, most recently, the UK. Korea to the US to the UK has become a fairly reliable pattern for the aesthetic devices that go on to define a category, rather than the ones that quietly disappear within a year.
What a session actually looks like
Treatment runs 45 to 90 minutes with no numbing cream required, just the device’s built-in cooling. There’s no downtime; patients return to normal activity immediately, and results develop gradually over three to six months as new collagen forms, typically lasting 12 to 24 months.
It tends to suit people in their late thirties through fifties noticing early jawline or neck laxity, younger patients using it as a preventative step, and those wanting a non-surgical way to extend the results of a previous facelift.
Where to find it
Given how recently XERF arrived in the UK, only a handful of clinics currently offer it with proper training behind it.
