Every era has its own beauty craze. In the 1960s there were false eyelashes, in the 80s it was all about thick hair, and the 90s were synonymous with self-tanners. In the last two decades, the focus has shifted to the hands and in particular the innovative world of nail art, with an increasing emphasis on eco-friendly options.

The Clean Beauty Transformation

The global clean beauty products market, which includes eco-friendly nail products, was valued at USD 8.25 billion in 2023 and is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 14.8% from 2024 to 2030. This remarkable growth reflects a significant shift in consumer preferences towards safer, more sustainable beauty products.

Amidst this burgeoning market, one brand has been at the forefront of the eco-friendly nail care movement: PRITINYC. Founded by former model Kim D’Amato, PRITINYC specialises in high-quality nail polishes that are organic and free from chemical ‘pollutants”.

The Birth of PRITINYC

We sat down with Kim D’Amato to talk about the journey of PRITINYC since its inception.

Q: Kim, can you take us back to the beginning? What inspired you to start PRITINYC?

A: It all started during my first pregnancy. I was looking for long-lasting and luxurious nail colours that were safe for expectant mothers, but I just couldn’t find any. That’s when I realised there was a gap in the market for high-quality, non-toxic nail polishes.

Q: Looking back, do you ever think about the early days when PRITINYC was just an idea?

A: Definitely. I was sitting with friends the other day and it reminded me of my struggle to get people to think about what they were doing on their bodies. I felt like I was falling on a lot of deaf ears, but my friends at Teens Turning Green were talking out loud about the harmful chemicals teenagers are putting on the body’s largest organ: the skin!

The Importance of Non-Toxic Formulas

Kim’s concern about harmful chemicals in nail polish was well-founded. Conventional nail polishes often contain toxins such as formaldehyde, toluene and dibutyl phthalate (DBP), which have been linked to various health problems, including fertility complications, thyroid problems, obesity and even cancer.

Q: When you started out, ‘eco nail chic’ wasn’t really a trend yet. How did you overcome the challenges of introducing a new concept to the market?

A: When I opened my spa, I couldn’t find a nail polish that I liked, so I decided to develop my own line. At the time, no one was using non-toxic formulas because they were too expensive. Knowing that the benefits were much greater than regular nail polish, I embarked on the expensive journey – I wanted my spa to be as green as possible, so I found the best possible options and people.

Consumer Awareness and Demand

The landscape of consumer awareness has changed dramatically since PRITINYC was founded. Recent studies have shown that consumer awareness of the importance of clean beauty products is growing.

Q: How has consumer awareness changed since you started PRITINYC?

A: The change has been remarkable. When we first started, we had to educate consumers about why non-toxic polishes are important. Today, customers come to us specifically looking for environmentally friendly options. They’re better informed and more aware of what they’re putting into their bodies.

Indeed, a 2023 survey found that 63% of respondents actively look for products with natural ingredients that they believe are good for their skin. In addition, 90% of consumers believe that it’s important for cosmetics brands to be transparent about their ingredients.

Regulatory Landscape and Global Differences

The clean beauty movement has also highlighted significant differences in cosmetics regulations around the world. For example, the European Union has banned or restricted over 1,300 chemicals in cosmetics, while the United States has banned or restricted only 11. These differences have prompted many consumers to seek out brands that adhere to stricter standards, regardless of their location.

Q: How did these regulatory differences impacted PRITINYC?

A: We have always aimed to meet the highest standards globally. While it can be challenging, it has allowed us to build trust with our customers worldwide. They know that when they choose PRITINYC, they’re getting a product that is safe even under the strictest regulations.

Celebrity Endorsements and Industry Recognition

As awareness of clean beauty has grown, so has PRITINYC’s reputation.

Q: Your brand has gained a large following, including among celebrities. How does that make you feel?

A: I feel honoured when I hear celebrities like Jessica Alba and Miranda Kerr, who both have amazing brands of their own, talk about my brand in their books and in the press. It makes me proud that these ladies have time to try out my brand and have wonderful things to say about PRITINYC and share their knowledge with their followers, clients, and friends.

Future Trends in Eco-Friendly Nail Care

The market for clean beauty is constantly evolving and new trends are emerging. These include sustainable packaging solutions, AI-driven personalised formulations, an increased focus on vegan and cruelty-free certifications and the integration of ingredients that promote nail health.

Q: What future trends do you see in eco-friendly nail care, and how is PRITINYC preparing for them?

A: We’re constantly looking for innovations. I’m particularly excited about incorporating more plant-based, healing ingredients into our formulas. We’re also exploring more sustainable packaging options to further reduce our environmental impact. The future of nail care isn’t just about colour, but about overall nail health and environmental responsibility.

Looking Forward

As PRITINYC continues its journey, it’s clear that Kim D’Amato’s vision of eco-friendly, non-toxic nail care has not only found its place in the beauty industry, but has helped shape it. With the growing awareness of the importance of clean beauty products, PRITINYC and similar brands are well positioned to continue to grow and make an impact in the years to come.
