Fuller-looking hair can mean a higher hair density—the number of hairs in a given area—or less scalp showing through. Ingredient supplier IFF reports improvements in density, thickness, scalp coverage and growth rate in a 120-day study of a hair serum containing a sugar-beet-derived ingredient. The ingredient is myo-inositol, which IFF obtains from sugar-beet molasses and sells as a purified powder under the name GENENCARE OSMS MI. The molasses comes from sugar production, and the company describes recovering the ingredient from this by-product as upcycling.
The study included a placebo comparison, according to IFF. The company calls the changes “significant”, but gives no numerical results or statistical details on its public product page. That description alone does not tell readers how large or noticeable the changes were.
The study tested the complete hair serum. The information available does not show whether myo-inositol alone caused the improvements.
IFF also reports positive findings from preclinical testing—research carried out before testing in people. These concerned the structure and activity of hair follicles. IFF does not explain how those tests were done. Such findings cannot, on their own, show a benefit in people.
The human study offers the more relevant test of the proposed hair-care use. But IFF does not say how many people took part or provide detailed methods and study limitations on its public page. Without those details, it is hard to judge how dependable the findings are or who might expect similar results.
The results remain company-reported. The Cosmetics Business item about the ingredient is labelled promoted content and links to IFF’s product page; it does not independently confirm the findings. The available material also does not establish whether the study has been independently reviewed or published. IFF reports a possible cosmetic benefit, but how much difference the hair serum made remains unclear.
