SAN FRANCISCO, California — There is something to be said about natural beauty. That fresh-faced, sweet and approachable look is low-maintenance and simplistic. Unfortunately, not all of us have natural-born gorgeous skin, dark brows and long curled lashes. Some of us may have to fake that natural look with great makeup products. So here, with the help of makeup artist Maggie Thach and Sara Dashty, we help you master that barely-there makeup look with only 6 simple steps using the products they love!

1. Tinted Moisturiser or BB Cream with SPF

The natural makeup look is all about youthful, radiant skin. So using a good moisturiser, tinted or BB cream with SPF is key in getting that healthy glow. Los Angeles-based makeup artist Maggie Thach shares with us what she uses on the models backstage at fashion shows. “For the natural look, my favourite product to use in place of foundation is Jane Iredale Glow Time Full Coverage Mineral BB cream. It is a miraculous multi-tasking skincare cream, makeup and sun protection all-in-one! The formula is rich in vitamins, natural minerals and antioxidants; combined with the perfect tint coverage and broad spectrum SPF 25 UVA protection to instantly give you that dewy, healthy complexion while diminishing imperfections on your skin.”

2. Concealer or Foundation

A perfect complexion is not complete without concealer. A must-have item in San Francisco-based makeup artist Sara Dashty’s bag is MAC Studio Finish SPF 35 Concealer. Dashty says: “It is important to use concealer to cover imperfections like blemishes and dark circles under eyes. This product covers the dark circles under eyes perfectly and never gets cakey. Just make sure you do not use much, and apply it with a concealer brush or pat with your fingertips to blend. If you already have fairly good skin, use the MAC Studio Moisture Cream, along with the MAC concealer to enhance and even out your natural skin tone. Another favourite product of mine is the MAC Studio Mineralise Moisture SPF 15 Foundation, for heavier coverage to create a more velvety, flawless finish; which is the first step in creating natural beauty.”

3. Well-defined Brows

Without much makeup, brows are the focal point on your face. So having well-defined and groomed brows are a must. Thach, who has worked on musician Nadia Ali’s makeup before she goes out onstage, recommends using Anastasia Beverly Hills Dipbrow Pomade’ Waterproof Brow Colour, because it glides on smoothly without fading and adheres to your hair. Thach adds: “For more well-defined brows, apply a clear mascara like Bobbi Brown ‘Natural’ Brow Shaper & Hair Touch-up, to shape and put your brows in place.”

4. Mascara

Amping up your lashes is crucial for the eye-opening look with barely-there makeup. And with the right mascara, it will help intensify the look of your natural lashes, by darkening and extending it without clumping. Just make sure you curl your lashes first. Then apply a coat of mascara to both your top and bottom lashes. Dashty, whose work included makeup for Ari Fitz, from the “Real World” reality show, suggests using L’Oréal Paris Telescopic Mascara, to pump up your lashes. Dashty says: “It is a sure-fire way to draw attention to your eyes!”

5. Bronzer or Blush

To choose the right bronzer or blush, make sure you select a shade that goes well with your skin tone. When applying bronzer, brush onto cheeks, forehead, around the nose and chin to give it an overall balance, says Thach. “I love the Urban Decay ‘Naked Flushed’ Bronzer, Highlighter & Blush Palette, because it contains bronzer, highlighter and blush all-in-one palette so you could personalise your look. The colour goes well with most skin tones. You can mix, layer and blend the pigments together to achieve the radiance and luminosity of the natural makeup look that is right for you.”

6. A Glossy Pout

Lastly, “a glossy pout finishes your natural makeup look, and makes it stand out,” says Dashty. Her choice of lip gloss for the look is CHANEL Aqualumiere Gloss #707, because it is sheer, yet has long lasting shine for that sexy, natural looking pout!

We hope our 6 steps on how to get that natural makeup look, courtesy of makeup artist Maggie Thach and Sara Dashty, will help enhance your natural beauty, as well as speed up your daily morning makeup routine. A subtle, natural makeup look as though you are born with it!
